Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies (CBTS)

The Faculty of Education is in the process of re-writing the Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies programme.  The new programme will be launched in January 2012.  The following information should enable prospective applicants to prepare their application and their participation on the programme.

DELIVERY
The Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies is a part-time programme, enabling you to study alongside your personal and professional commitments. The programme covers a range of areas in subject and professional studies as well as practical teaching and starts in January of each year.  It is delivered over two years and you should expect to study for a minimum of 20 hours per week.  The programme is studied mainly by distance learning but you will be required to attend Intensive Study Periods at the relevant time and you will need to be prepared to travel.
We are planning to deliver the programme in the following teaching centres in 2012: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and the USA. It is sometimes possible for students from other countries to study at one of these centres; however, in any given year, the programme will only run in a specific country if there are sufficient numbers.

The programme is delivered in the first language of the teaching centre country. If more than one language is spoken, the RAD retains the right to determine the language of delivery. Please note that if the language of delivery is not your first language, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are able to read, write and speak proficiently in that language.

PRACTICAL TEACHING
In your second year you will gain more teaching experience in a teaching placement.  During this placement you will be supported by your mentor and a tutor.
Student participation in observation and the teaching placement is subject to a satisfactory police check.

MODULE OVERVIEW

Year 1:

CBTS401 Observation for Teaching (15 credits)
Delivery: January to March
In this module students will be introduced to observation skills and techniques which are essential for any teacher. Students will look at how young children move and relate to their surroundings, to other children and to adults. Observation tasks include watching children at play and in a dance class setting. The module prepares the way for practical teaching in Year 2 and introduces some of the professional, ethical and pedagogical requirements for an RAD Teacher.

CBTS402 Health, Safety and Professional Responsibilities (15 credits)
Delivery: March to June
This module covers knowledge and understanding of the requirements of teachers in terms of health, safety and professional responsibilities. Units of work focus on the impact of national legislation and professional codes of conduct on dance teaching in the private sector. Students research government policies looking at issues such as child protection, equal opportunities and disability pertinent to the country in which they are studying. All students study the requirements of the Code of Conduct and Professional Practice for Teachers Registered with the Royal Academy of Dance.  

CBTS403 Ballet and Teaching: Knowledge and Understanding (30 credits)
Delivery: June to October
ISP Delivery: Scheduled beween August-September by the RAD
Knowledge and understanding of the RAD syllabus and examinations framework is essential to the programme and students begin by gaining a broad overview of the entirety of this work, from Pre-Primary to Solo Seal. Students also engage in in-depth study of key features of the syllabi, including distinctions between Graded and Vocational Graded work and the carefully devised progressions or ‘building blocks’ which provide an essential structure for teaching and learning.  
The module includes a single Intensive Study Period (10 days) where students are required to attend practical workshops and discussion groups with RAD Tutors. Priority is given to work from Pre-Primary to Intermediate so that students have sufficient knowledge and skills to begin teaching in Year 2.
* Duration of the Intensive Study Period will be confirmed prior to the Programme commencing.  

Year 2:

CBTS404 Practical Teaching (45 credits)
Delivery: between January to October
The primary aim of the CBTS programme is to equip students to begin teaching and in this module, students will undertake practical teaching supported by an RAD appointed Mentor. The module begins with observation of teaching, working as a teaching assistant and teaching parts of a class until students are sufficiently prepared to teach a whole class. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 45 hours of teaching and are provided with additional tutoring and support from a Practical Teaching Supervisor. 

CBTS405 Professional Portfolio (15 credits)
Delivery: between January and October
In this module students demonstrate that they have met all of the criteria for teacher registration with the RAD. The portfolio is an electronic document which contains the evidence that these criteria are met in the form of written tasks, certificates of attendance, Mentor and Practical Teaching Supervisor Reports, and other evidence from modules CBTS401-404.  Students receive tutorial support throughout the duration of the module from the Module Tutor. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
One of the following RAD examinations:
- Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1, Advanced 2, Intermediate, or an equivalent examination from a recognised dance teaching society. Please note that Grades 6-8 do not qualify as Vocational Graded examinations.
- Applicants without formal qualifications may be considered on submission of video/DVD evidence (Please refer to http://www.radeducation.org.uk/appform for guidance on the content of the video). 

ACCREDITATION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Applicants who are offered a place may apply for Accreditation of Prior Learning (AP(E)L), including experiential learning, against one or more modules. AP(E)L cannot be awarded for part of a module. Please note that application for AP(E)L is a separate process which can only take place after an offer has been made and accepted. All applications for AP(E)L will be processed centrally by the Faculty of Education Registry in London.  AP(E)L is a lengthy, time-consuming process for which a fee will be charged. Applicants who need advice on CBTS module exemptions should contact FOE Registry at the earliest opportunity.

TUITION AND OTHER FEES
If you are offered a place on the programme, a registration fee of £75 is payable when you accept the offer.  This is non-refundable.
The tuition fee for the Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies is paid in instalments over the course of the two years of study on or before specific deadlines.  Further information on the tuition fee for each teaching centre can be obtained from the Faculty of Education website or the National Administrators when it becomes available: http://www.radeducation.org.uk/feesandfunding

Application is made by sending the completed Faculty of Education application form to Registry.  International students should send their application to their National Administrator.

Deadlines during the application process:

Late or incomplete applications cannot be accepted.

AWARD

Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies and eligibility for registration as a teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance.
